ECR Big Walk 2014

Posted By: Jeannette Shelton on May 20, 2014

Wow! Who knew 30 000 odd people were so many!
We arrived at Moses Mabhida Stadium at 08:30 a.m. knowing that our starting time was to be 09:45 a.m.  The parking lot was pretty full by then so we had a long way to walk to the bus pick-up point that was to take us down to Ushaka for the start.  The queue was all around the parking lot so by the time we got to the bus we were already warmed up having walked about 2km from the car.

The queue took a while to move so we only boarded the bus at 09:35 and were dropped at Ushaka at about 09:50 and only managed to cross the start line at 10:01 a.m.

It was a lovely cool day and fantastic to see whole families out having fun.  Children on scooters, on rollerblades or in prams all added to the experience.  When we passed the paddling pools it was fun to watch one family hopping along the stepping stones in the middle of the pools, giggling their heads off.

There were water points along the route and entertainment to keep everyone going.
After the walk we went back to Dionysus 59 Florida Road offices for a braai and held a post-mortem of the event.  It appears that everyone had fun and would like to do it again next year.

Those who did not enter, you missed out.  Start training now and let’s see you at the start next year.
Thank you to Irene and Quentin for sponsoring this event so that the staff could have some fun together, outside of the usual rushed workday.
